The most common types of pneumococcal diseases are:
Meningitis:
Location: Lining of the brain or spinal cord
Effects: Serious and possibly permanent disabilities like hearing loss, mental retardation, paralysis or
even death
Symptoms: Fever, headache, lethargy, vomiting, drowsiness, stiffness (e.g. in necks or legs), possibly
coma, etc.
Bacteraemia:
Location: Blood
Effects: Blood poisoning, septic shock, death, etc.
Note: The pneumococcus bacteria may spread to the other parts of the body through the blood.
Symptoms: Fever, muscular aches and pains, quick or rapid breathing, irritability, etc.
Pneumonia:
Location: Lungs
Effects: Possibly death (especially in older patients)
Symptoms: Fever, cough, chest pains and congestion, shortness of breath, etc.
Otitis Media:
Location: Middle Ear
Symptoms: Painful ear, fever, hearing loss, nausea, etc.
