Although children are the highest risk group with regards to pneumococcal diseases, the following sub-groups of children are of particularly high risk:

1. Children below 2 years old

2. Children who attend day-care and are in contact with many other children

3. Children with poor immunity

4. Children who have had a recent course of antibiotics

5. Children with a history of middle ear infection

6. Children who have been exposed to passive smoking
