Many people naturally carry the pneumococcus bacteria in them but only a few actually become ill. Pneumococcus
bacteria are carried in the nasal and throat passages of healthy people (adults and children) and can be passed
to other people through sneezing or coughing; or close personal contact.
When someone sneezes or coughs, droplets of liquid are released into the air that contain the pneumococcus
bacteria. These droplets can then enter the bodies of other people through many mechanisms – e.g. breathed in, etc.
